Question

To know the resistance G of a galvanometer by half deflection method, a battery of emf VE and resistance R is used to deflect the galvanometer by angle θ . If a shunt of resistance S is needed to get half deflection the G, R and S are related by the equation:

Choose an option

Show full solutionCorrect option: A
Correct answer
ASR+G=RG

Step-by-step explanation

Let resistance S is connected with galvanometer of resistance G, than

IG=VR+G

Now, as shown below figure a shunt S is connected in parallel with the galvanometer for half deflection in it, that is IG' = IG2, than

 I=VR+GSG+S

As, shunt and galvanometer are in parallel  then VG=VS
IG'G=I-IG'S

IG'G+S=IS
IG2=ISG+S     IG'=IG2

On, substituting the values of IG and I in above equation

V2R+G=VR+GSG+S×SG+S
12R+G=SRG+S+GS
RG+S+GS=2SR+G
RG+RS+GS=2SR+G
RG=2SR+G-SR+G
RG=SR+G
