JEE Main 2022Nuclear Physics Question with Solution

JEE Main 2022 (29 Jul Shift 2)

Question

Two radioactive materials A and B have decay constants 25λ and 16λ respectively. If initially they have the same number of nuclei, then the ratio of the number of nuclei of B to that of A will be "e" after a time 1aλ. The value of a is _____ .

Correct answer
9

Step-by-step explanation

According to radioactive decay formula, N=N0e-λt, here, N0 is the initial number of nuclei in a radioactive material.

Given here,  λ1=25λ and λ2=16λ.

And NBNA=e

For radioactive material ANA=N0e-λ1t

For radioactive material BNB=N0e-λ2t

Thus, the ratio NBNA=e-λ2te-λ1t=e-λ2t·eλ1t

e1=eλ1-λ2t

λ1-λ2t=1

Time, t=1λ1-λ2=125λ-16λ=19λ.

Hence, the value of a=9.
