JEE Main 2023Vector Algebra Question with Solution

JEE Main 2023 (31 Jan Shift 1)

Question

Let a=2i^+j^+k^, and b and c be two nonzero vectors such that a+b+c=a+b-c and b·c=0. Consider the following two statement:

A a+λca for all λ.

B a and c are always parallel

Choose an option

Show full solutionCorrect option: C
Correct answer
Conly (A) is correct

Step-by-step explanation

Given,

a+b+c=a+b-c

Now squaring both side we get,

a+b+c2=a+b-c2

a2+b2+c2+2a·b+2b·c+2c·a=a2+b2+c2+2a·b-2b·c-2c·a

2b·c+2c·a=-2b·c+2c·a

4b·c+c·a=0

Now here given b·c=0, so

c·a=0 which means c & a are perpendicular vector, so statement B is false,

Now statementA: a+λca

a+λc2a2

a2+λc2+2a·ca2

λc2+2a·c0

λc20

This is not always true, since λR.

Hence, we can say that statementA is true and statement B is false.
