JEE Main 2021Ellipse Question with Solution

JEE Main 2021 (17 Mar Shift 2)

Question

Let L be a tangent line to the parabola y2=4x-20 at 6, 2. If L is also a tangent to the ellipse x22+y2 b=1, then the value of b is equal to :

Choose an option

Show full solutionCorrect option: B
Correct answer
B14

Step-by-step explanation

The equation of a tangent to a parabola y2=4ax-h at a point x1, y1 on it is yy1=4ax+x12-h.

Hence, the equation of tangent to parabola y2=4x-20 at 6, 2 is 2y=2(x+6)-20

y=x-4.

Also, a line y=mx+c is a tangent to the ellipse x2a2+y2b2=1 if c2=a2m2+b2.

Hence, by using the condition of tangency for ellipsex22+y2b=1 and the line y=x-4, we get

16=2(1)2+b

b=14.
