JEE Main 2024p Block Elements (Group 13 & 14) Question with Solution

JEE Main 2024 (31 Jan Shift 2)

Question

Given below are two statements :

Statement I: Group 13 trivalent halides get easily hydrolysed by water due to their covalent nature.

Statement II: AlCl3 upon hydrolysis in acidified aqueous solution forms octahedral AlH2O63+ ion.

In the light of the above statements, choose the correct answer from the options given below :

Choose an option

Show full solutionCorrect option: D
Correct answer
DBoth statement I and statement II are true

Step-by-step explanation

In trivalent state most of the 13th group compounds being covalent are hydrolysed in water. Trichlorides of group 13 on hydrolysis in water form tetrahedral MOH4 species, the hybridisation state of element M is sp3.

In case of aluminium, acidified aqueous solution forms octahedral AlH2O63+ ion, which has an aluminium as a central metal atom and water molecules as ligands. The aluminium is in +3  oxidation state and forms 6 sp3d2 hybrid orbitals.

Hence option D is the answer.
