JEE Main 2014General Organic Chemistry Question with Solution

JEE Main 2014 (06 Apr)

Question

For the estimation of nitrogen, 1.4 g of an organic compound was digested by the Kjeldahl method and the evolved ammonia was absorbed in 60 ml of M 1 0 sulphuric acid. The unreacted acid required 20 ml of M 1 0 sodium hydroxide for complete neutralization. The percentage of nitrogen in the compound is

Correct answer
B10%

Step-by-step explanation

In Kjeldahl method,

Per cent N = 1.4 N VW

Where, NV = gram equivalent of ammonia

W = weight of the organic compound

2NH3+H2SO4excess(NH4)2SO4

Total of H2SO4 used =60×110=6 mm = 6 x 2 =12 gm equivalent

2NaOH+H2SO4Na2SO4+2H2O

NaOH for back titration =20×110=2 gm equivalent

gm equivalent of remaining H2SO4=12-2=10

H2SO4 used for NH3 neutralisation =10 gm equivalent

NH3 (NV)=10 gm equivalent
Per cent of N=1.4 x101.4=10%
