JEE Main 2013 (07 Apr)

Question

A compound with molecular mass 180 is acylated with CH3COCl to get a compound with molecular mass 390. The number of amino groups presents per molecule of the former compound is

Correct answer
D5

Step-by-step explanation

After acylation the formula will be R-(NHCOCH3)x. Hence, the change in the molecular mass is calculated as below

For 1one NH214+2=16 unitsWhen It turns into NHCOCH3    14+1+12+16+12+3=58 Change in mass5816=42units. So for every NH2 , there will be an increase of 42g after acylation.   The total increase in mass = 390180 = 210   No. of amino groups=21042= 5 Hence number of amino groups are 5.

(12+16+12+3-1)x=390-180

or 42x=210; or x=5
